At Temple Israel of New Rochelle”™s 110th Anniversary Gala on May 5, Cantor Emerita Helene Shifrin Reps, the 12th woman to become an ordained cantor, was honored along with Beverly Hoffmann who received the Founder”™s Award and educator and author Amy Bass who received the President”™s Award.
Rabbi Beth Nichols said the cantor”™s “contributions to the well-being of our congregation are immeasurable and it is fitting that we honor her on this festive evening.” She studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony, sang with opera companies and ensembles and taught music in the New York City schools.
Hoffmann served on more than a dozen committees for the temple, including its board of trustees. She was part of the team that founded the Temple”™s Kehillah School.
Bass has been an educator, a radio host on WVOX, an Emmy-winning NBC researcher and is the author of four books. She chairs the temple”™s library committee and serves on its board
