MEMORIALIZING LOCAL ZOOLOGIST

The White Plains Beautification Foundation (WPBF) will memorialize a noted zoologist and former director of its organization on April 25 at its annual Arbor Day celebration in cooperation with White Plains public schools. 

Ruth Manecke, a longtime director and supporter of WPBF, was a noted zoologist who served as head zoologist and producer for the 1960s era children’s TV show Captain Kangaroo. A White Plains resident, she was also honored by the YWCA for her role in supporting the organization during Covid. Manecke passed away earlier this year at the age of 94.  

This year’s ceremony will be held at the Mamaroneck Avenue School in White Plains from 10 -11 a.m. and include remarks by Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins, White Plains Mayor Tom Roach and other officials, as well as performances by children from Mamaroneck Avenue School, 7 Nosband Ave. The public is welcome. 

“The annual Arbor Day Celebration is a special event when our community gathers to recognize the beauty of nature and to honor those who have contributed to the cause of beautification,’’ said Terry Hanson, president of White Plains Beautification Foundation. “This year we are planting a tree in memory of a remarkable woman, Ruth Manecke, who shared her love of animals and the natural world and inspired generations of children. We know that she would have been pleased that the children of this community are paying tribute to her on Arbor Day.’’ 

Each year the ceremony features school performances and dedication of a newly planted tree in memory of or in honor of a community member. This year, a Native Eastern Redbud tree, was chosen by Mamaroneck Avenue School and planted by Bartlett Tree Experts.  

The ceremony will also include a poetry reading and musical performances by students in the MAS Nature Club.  

Arbor Day, started in 1872 in Nebraska, and is celebrated in the U.S. on the last Friday in April.
