A new Quinnipiac University poll of registered voters in New York City released March 5 finds overall dissatisfaction with three top political leaders, NYC Mayor Eric Adams, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and U.S. President Trump.
Quinnipiac polling found that in a Democratic primary for the party’s nomination to run for mayor: Andrew Cuomo receives 31% support; incumbent Mayor Eric Adams receives 11%; Zohran Mamdani receives 8%; Jumaane Williams receives 7%; Scott Stringer receives 6%; Brad Lander receives 5%; Jessica Ramos and Adrienne Adams each receive 4%; and Zellnor Myrie, Michael Blake, and Whitney Tilson each receive 1%.
The new poll found that a record low 20% of voters approve of the way Adams is handling his job as mayor, while 67% disapprove and 13% did not offer an opinion.

This is the lowest job approval rating of any New York City mayor in the nearly 30 years since Quinnipiac University began polling New York City registered voters. The previous low was set by Adams in Quinnipiac University’s December 2023 poll, when 28% approved of the job Adams was doing, while 58% disapproved and 14% did not offer an opinion.
Adams did better with Republicans than Democrats, perhaps a reflection of his association with President Trump. His disapproval rating with Democrats was 78% compared with 52% among Republicans.
Quinnipiac Poll’s Assistant Director Mary Snow pointed out that Adams drop in approval coincides with his corruption case becoming a national issue with the Trump Administration’s efforts to drop the charges and Adams working with the administration to enforce its immigration policies.
“In the court of public opinion, voters think it’s time for Adams to step aside,” Snow said.
Four in 10 voters, 40%, believe Adams did something illegal, while 31% believe he did something unethical but nothing illegal, and 13% believe he did not do anything wrong. Sixteen percent did not offer an opinion.
Fifty-six percent of voters think that Adams should resign as mayor. That’s the same percentage as said they would like to see Mayor Adams do more to stand up to President Trump when it comes to the issue of undocumented immigrants. On the other hand, 33% said they would like to see Adams do more to work with Trump on this issue and 11% did not offer an opinion.
Voters are split on their approval of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, with 43% approving of the job she is doing, 42% disapproving, and 15% not offering an opinion.
When it comes to President Trump, 30% of voters approve of the job he is doing, while 65% disapprove, and 5% did not offer an opinion.
Forty-five percent of voters approve of Trump’s action to end New York City’s congestion pricing toll, while 49% disapprove.
