Another deadly boat strike by the U.S.
The U.S. military carried out another deadly attack on a boat in the Eastern Pacific, killing four people on board. According to the U.S. Southern Command, the vessel in international waters was carrying illegal narcotics at the time of the strike but no evidence was produced to back the claim. At least 87 people have now been killed in strikes on 23 boats. At a closed door Capitol Hill hearing yesterday, a video was shown of the U.S. military staging a secondary attack on the wreckage of a boat that had been destroyed. The two survivors of the first missile attack, who were in the water clinging to pieces of wreckage and unable to take any offensive action on their own, were killed. Attacking survivors is considered to be a war crime when it happens during a war and murder when there is no war.
Netflix announces $72B deal to buy Warner Bros.
Netflix has triumphed in the bidding war for Warner Bros. and HBO, announcing a deal today that could combine two of the three biggest streaming services with one of the largest traditional movie and television studios. Netflix would wind up owning the library of films held by Warner Bros. What would happen with Warner’s cable networks such as CNN was not immediately clear. Larry Ellison, an ally of Donald Trump, has been trying to buy Warner. There’s speculation Ellison may try to outdo Netflix with a better offer. Ellison and his son recently took control of Paramount, which owns CBS, and installed new management at CBS News. Donald Trump has long been a critic of CBS News and Warner’s news network CNN.
Supreme Court ruling on Texas map
The conservative justices on the Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for Texas to use newly redrawn congressional maps that strongly favor Republicans — a major win for the party ahead of the midterm elections. Under the redistricting, Texas Republicans hope to gain as many as five additional House seats, boosting their chances of holding on to their majority in the chamber. The Texas redistricting took place at the urging of Donald Trump. However, the Trump Justice Department has filed a lawsuit to try to stop redistricting in California that could allow the Democrats to pick up five House seats, thus balancing out what the Republicans have done in Texas.
Trump administration ignores judges on Halligan ruling
Federal judges in Alexandria, Virginia, have lashed out at Donald Trump’s Justice Department for continuing to list Lindsey Halligan on court documents. Halligan is the interim U.S. attorney appointed by Trump whose term expired yet was kept on by the Trump administration as U.S. attorney in Virginia. Two magistrate judges and a district court judge in Alexandria, Virginia, told prosecutors in open court Halligan’s name should not be on new criminal case filings, such as guilty plea documents and indictments, after a decision in the district last week said she is not the U.S. Attorney. One of those judges, Magistrate William Fitzpatrick, said at a criminal case hearing that filing criminal charging papers “under Ms. Halligan’s name” at this time “is simply not acceptable,” according to a hearing transcript obtained by CNN.
Putin renews threat against Ukrainian territory
Russian President Vladimir Putin is in India for a high-stakes meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit comes as Modi tries to balance his trade relationship with the U.S. and his ties with Russia. Ahead of the summit, Putin spoke to Indian media and said Moscow would seize Ukraine’s Donbas region “by military or other means.” One of the Kremlin’s main demands for ending the war is for Ukraine to surrender territory in the Donbas, which Russia illegally annexed but has not yet fully conquered. As Russia doubles down on these territorial demands, which Ukrainian officials continue to reject, the path toward any compromise seems increasingly unclear.
Arrest in D.C. pipe bomber case
The FBI arrested a Virginia man on Thursday in its almost five-year investigation into the planting of pipe bombs near the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington , D.C., the night before the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot to try to overturn Donald Trump’s election defeat. The FBI believes the man, 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr., gathered bomb-making supplies for months before leaving the viable explosive devices outside of the political offices. Cole was due to appear before a federal judge in court today.
