Shooting between U.S. and Iran continues as Trump says ceasefire remains
U.S. forces fired at Iranian military installations as Iran fired at U.S. Navy ships as well as the United Arab Emirates, while Donald Trump says the ceasefire is holding and talks to end the war are going very well. Trump calls the most recent U.S. attacks on Iran “love taps.” The Iranian facilities targeted by U.S. forces included “missile and drone launch sites, command and control locations; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes,” according to U.S. Central Command. Trump tried to pressure the Iranian leadership by posting on social media. “We’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST!” he wrote. Central Command said Iran used multiple missiles, drones and small boats in a failed effort to hit three U.S. Navy ships.
U.S. adds more jobs than forecast
The U.S. economy added a stronger-than-expected 115,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate stayed at 4.3%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday. April’s employment gains mark an expected retreat from March, when a revised 185,000 jobs were created, boosted by factors such as the end of large labor strikes as well as favorable weather. However, the job growth seen last month was much stronger than the 65,000 that economists had estimated. No change in the unemployment rate was anticipated. The war in the Middle East wasn’t expected to negatively affect April’s employment numbers but it still presents a risk. The health of the U.S. labor market and the broader economy could be negatively affected if gas prices stay persistently high and cut into consumer spending, raise business costs, as well as trickle into higher prices for other goods and services.
Court rules Trump’s new tariffs are illegal
The U.S. Court of International Trade has ruled that Donald Trump’s 10% across-the-board tariffs are illegal. The court found that Trump lacked the justification to enact tariffs under a 1974 trade law known as Section 122. The administration began to enact the Section 122 tariffs after the Supreme Court ruled that tariffs Trump had ordered as emergency actions were illegal. The new court ruling calls for the administration to stop collecting the tariffs from the plaintiffs who sued and refund prior payments. The tariffs can continue to be collected from others until July. Section 122 allows a president to impose tariffs up to 15% across all imports without getting congressional approval if certain criteria are met. In this instance, the judges found the administration failed to show that the Executive Order Trump signed to put the tariffs into effect did not meet the criteria.
Health authorities try to prevent further hantavirus spread
Health authorities across several countries are racing to trace and contain an outbreak of the hantavirus after the World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday that five confirmed infections had been identified among people connected to the cruise ship MV Hondius. Three people – a Dutch couple and a German national – have died since the vessel departed Argentina last month. Meanwhile, a total of 146 people from 23 different countries – including 17 Americans – are still aboard the vessel under “strict precautionary measures,” operator Oceanwide Expeditions said Thursday. At least 30 passengers disembarked at the remote South Atlantic island of Saint Helena in late April and several critical cases were air-evacuated to Europe this week. The ship is due to arrive in Spain’s Canary Islands this weekend. Spanish authorities said in their latest update that the ship will arrive in Tenerife around noon local time (7:00 a.m. ET) on Sunday.
Italy’s foreign minister attacks Trump for criticism of Pope Leo
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has taken to social media to blast Donald Trump’s attacks on Pope Leo. Tajani says Trump’s verbal assaults are neither acceptable nor helpful for the cause of peace. He underscored his support for Pope Leo and the pope’s comments that support freedom and the value of human life. He added that the Italian government supports the idea of peace through negotiation and diplomacy and does not support war as a means to achieve stability and peace where conflicts exist.
Trump wants $7.5 million paint job
Donald Trump wants to spend $7.5 million to paint the historic Eisenhower Office building, which is next to the White House and is where many of the White House staff members work. Trump wants to paint the building white. The head of the White House Office of Administration appeared at a meeting of the National Capital Planning Commission yesterday to push the idea. Trump’s plan to paint the building was described as being part of his more expansive plans to change the way Washington looks. The Eisenhower building’s exterior is granite, which has been kept its natural color since the building was constructed in the late 1800s.
