Trump and Zelenskyy meet in Florida
President Trump says negotiators are getting “closer” to a Ukraine peace deal after he met with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy at his Florida resort on Sunday, although he acknowledged that “thorny issues” remain. Following more than three hours of talks, neither leader announced any breakthrough in ending Russia’s war. At a news conference with Trump, Zelenskyy said Ukraine accepts most of what’s in a 20-point peace plan. Russian President Putin, however, has not agreed to any of it. Trump praised Putin and said he wants peace. The latest flurry of U.S. diplomacy comes after Russia on Saturday launched its longest sustained attack on Kyiv this year, killing at least two people, wounding dozens and leaving many without heating amid freezing temperatures in the Ukrainian capital.
Winter weather alerts
More than 30 million people across the Midwest and Northeast are under winter weather alerts as hazardous conditions disrupt travel one of the busiest stretches of the holiday season. Blizzard warnings remain in effect in parts of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, where visibility has dropped to near-whiteout levels. Air travel has been severely impacted: thousands of flights were delayed or canceled on Sunday, and further disruptions are expected today. Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was among the affected airports after thunderstorms prompted a temporary ground stop hours ago. Some parts of Interstate 35 — a major highway running from Texas to Minnesota — have also been closed or deemed unsafe to travel.
Helicopter midair collision
Two helicopters collided in southern New Jersey on Sunday, leaving one pilot dead and injuring the other. Only the pilots were on board the aircraft when they collided near Hammonton Municipal Airport , according to the FAA. Hammonton is about 35 miles from Philadelphia and is near the New Jersey Pine Barrens, a vast area of forested wilderness. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash and has dispatched an investigator to the scene to examine the wreckage, gather flight data, maintenance records, witness statements and more.
Gaza ceasefire to be discussed
President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were due today to discuss the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan. Netanyahu arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday ahead of the meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. The U.S. has been urging both Israel and Hamas to work toward phase two of the peace plan, but both sides continue to accuse each other of violating the deal. While the Trump administration is ready to begin reconstruction of the enclave, Israel remains focused on disarming Hamas and the demilitarization of Gaza — a key component of the agreement, but one that has no clear path forward.
At least 13 killed in train wreck
At least 13 people have died and 98 were injured after a train derailed in Mexico on Sunday, according to the Mexican Navy. There were 250 people on board. The derailment occurred in Asunción Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca, on the train’s main line between Veracruz and Salina Cruz. Managed by Mexico’s Navy, the Interoceanic Train links Mexico’s Pacific and Gulf coasts. Its main line only came into service in 2023, under a new program by then-Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador to promote economic development in southern Mexico and create an alternative to the Panama Canal for cargo transport.
Brigitte Bardot dies at 91
Legendary French actress Brigitte Bardot has died at age 91. A symbol of rebellious youth and beauty, Brigitte Bardot helped usher in the sexual revolution in the movies with her sensual, uninhibited performances in films like Jean-Luc Godard’s “Contempt.” Then in the second half of her life, she carved an unconventional path as a fierce advocate for animal rights. Bardot became a box-office phenomenon in the United States and helped to popularize foreign films with Americans at a time when censorship in Hollywood movies forbade frank discussions of sex, much less nudity. Describing her impact, Life magazine said in 1961, “Everywhere girls walk, dress, wear their hair like Bardot and wish they were free souls like her.”
