U.S. helicopter lost off coast of Oman
Two U.S. crew members were “safely rescued” after a U.S. Army Apache helicopter went down off the coast of Oman, the U.S. military confirmed early Tuesday. “The soldiers were safely rescued within approximately two hours and are in stable condition. The cause of the incident is under investigation,” U.S. Central Command, the military branch responsible for operations in the Middle East, said. The loss of the aircraft marks the first loss of an Apache since the war with Iran began. It comes after hostilities in the region escalated over the weekend, with Iran and Israel exchanging their first direct strikes in months late Sunday. The U.S. military said the helicopter was patrolling regional waters.
Trump again claims deal to end Iran war is almost at hand
Donald Trump has again claimed that a deal between the U.S. and Iran to end the war he started is almost a done deal, despite Iran again saying that there is no imminent deal and, in fact, a deal is unlikely. During a tele-rally for Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina on Monday, Trump predicted “total victory” in the next two weeks and said Iran was “willing to give us everything.” Then, speaking to reporters early Tuesday after attending the NBA Finals in New York City, Trump said the sides were “in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal.” “The strait (of Hormuz) will open up right away,” Trump added. “It’ll open up immediately upon signing, which could be in two or three days.”
Trump booed at Madison Square Garden
The San Antonio Spurs beat the New York Knicks 115-111 at Madison Square Garden on Monday, trimming New York’s lead in the NBA Finals to 2-1. The game also drew national attention as Donald Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game. When Trump’s image was shown on the jumbo video screens in the arena, there were loud boos from the crowd. The boos also dominated at watch parties being held outside of the arena around the city. Tight security was in effect at Madison Square Garden because of Trump’s presence, with ticket holders for the game told to arrive at least two hours ahead of game time to undergo what was described as”airport like” security screening.
Pratt out of running in LA
City Councilwoman Nithya Raman will advance to the November election in the Los Angeles mayoral race after overtaking Republican Spencer Pratt for second place as more votes have been counted in the days after the June 2 primary. Raman will face incumbent Mayor Karen Bass. Pratt, a former reality TV star, was endorsed by Donald Trump. While the mayoral election is officially nonpartisan, Democrats heavily outnumber Republicans in Los Angeles, and Raman has campaigned as a progressive outsider against Bass. California elections often take several days to resolve, a function of the nation’s most populous state running a largely mail-in election in which properly postmarked ballots received up to seven days after Election Day can be counted.
Primaries in four states today
Primaries in four states on Tuesday will offer clues about how much tolerance voters have for candidates with baggage while testing President Donald Trump’s influence. Elections will be held in Maine, South Carolina, Nevada and North Dakota. The marquee contest is the race for U.S. Senate in Maine. The expected winner of the Democratic nomination, Graham Platner, has been embroiled in personal scandals. He has made online comments that many people find offensive and sported a Nazi tattoo that he since has covered up. Platner held a commanding lead in primary polls, prompting Maine’s Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, the favorite of the party establishment, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, to to suspend her campaign.
Screwworm outbreak being monitored
The screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite and longtime foe of American ranchers, has again appeared in cattle in the U.S. after being absent for decades. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed at least three infected cattle Texas this week. The beef industry has already been grappling with the smallest cattle herd in 75 years due to prolonged droughts. Those smaller herds have helped drive retail beef prices to a record $9.64 per pound in April, up 13% from the previous year, according to USDA data. With only a handful of cases so far, it’s too soon to tell if prices will jump more because of the parasite. A full-blown screwworm outbreak could cost the beef industry $3 billion across the Southwest, according to a report by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
