Burke Rehabilitation, a leading provider of advanced physical and medical rehabilitation and member of the Montefiore Health System, has received $300,000 in state grants to invest in cutting-edge technology to elevate its award-winning inpatient care. Specifically, the funding will contribute to the installation of hospital smart beds, an innovation shown to improve patient health outcomes and experience with a focus on safety while promoting faster recovery times.
“I am grateful for the unwavering support of our elected officials, Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, Assemblyman Pretlow, and Assemblyman Benedetto, as we continue to invest in innovations and patient-centered care to better serve individuals with complex conditions and intensive rehabilitation needs,” said Burke Rehabilitation Executive Director Scott Edelman, MBA, CPA, CFE. “The addition of these smart beds to our rehabilitation hospital will undoubtedly bolster each patient’s personalized recovery from strokes, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and other neurological and orthopedic conditions.”
The smart beds monitor patient vitals and alert staff of any abnormal readings, allowing for contact-free continuous monitoring transmitted to a display at the nurses’ station, enabling staff to review all patients in the unit quickly and provide timely intervention.
Their purchase is made possible by one $100,000 SAM (State and Municipal Facilities) grant secured by Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and two $100,000 CREST (Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology Program) grants secured by Assemblymen Gary Pretlow and Michael Benedetto.
The grants will cover 30 new smart beds, for a total of 135 smart beds, representing 90% of the 150 beds at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. The Centrella Smart+ Beds are manufactured by Hillrom and are expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2026.

It is my hope that this investment will help to ensure that patients recovering from serious illness or injury will receive the best care possible, supported by the latest technology. This adds to my previous support in helping Burke to create the soon-to-open CT Scanner Suite.”
