NEW HAVEN – Tweed-New Haven Airport has received a $1 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) through the federal Airport Improvement Program to fund critical safety infrastructure, the airport announced Wednesday, Jan. 15.
The grant will fund the expansion of the airport’s existing Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) building by 1,100 square feet. This will allow the airport to more efficiently meet its 14 federal safety requirements, enhance emergency response capabilities, and continue to ensure the safety of all passengers and staff.
The expansion will continue the FAA’s investment in Tweed by accommodating the two new ARFF vehicles and equipment acquired in recent years.
“This grant is a critical investment in the safety and preparedness of Tweed-New Haven Airport,” said Tom Rafter, executive director, Tweed-New Haven Airport. “By expanding our Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting facility, we’re enhancing our ability to respond effectively to emergencies and uphold the highest safety standards.”
The chair of the Tweed airport authority thanked the state congressional delegation for their help in securing the funds.
“This award is another testament to the strong collaboration between Tweed New Haven Airport and our federal, state, and local elected officials,” said Chair Robert Reed. “These funds will not only allow HVN (Tweed) to continue operating safely for all travelers and visitors, it will also support our broader goals of ensuring sustainable growth and continued service to the community.”
U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy were glad to make the airport more safe for travelers.
“This $1 million federal investment will support critical safety and emergency response improvements for travelers at Tweed-New Haven Airport,” said Blumenthal. “I’ll continue to fight for federal resources that support the modernization and sustainable development of New Haven as a hub for air travel.”
“Tweed Airport is key to growing investment in New Haven, and this grant will help make sure travelers and staff are safe while they fly in and out of the airport,” said Murphy.
“The project underscores (Tweed’s) ongoing commitment to modernization and compliance with federal safety standards. Tweed-New Haven Airport continues to play a critical role in the region’s economic development and transportation infrastructure.”
