MILFORD – The parent company of razor manufacturer Schick announced Thursday, Nov. 13, it will close the plant at 10 Leighton Road by the end of 2027 leaving 293 people without jobs.
The expected date of the first layoffs will be between March 2 and 16, 2026, according to a letter sent from Edgewell Personal Care to the state Department of Labor and Milford Mayor Tony Giannattasio. All affected employees will be notified at least 60 days prior to their individual separation date. The employees will be eligible for severance benefits, which includes outplacement assistance. All layoffs are expected to be completed by Dec. 17-31, 2027.
The Schick brand, one of the earliest repeating and electric razors, will continue to exist under Edgewell, which will maintain its headquarters in Connecticut. The company plans to invest in the creation of a global Shave Innovation Center at its headquarters. Company officials stated the manufacturing operation may be moved elsewhere, but did not specify where.
Schick has been in Milford since 1961, when it moved its manufacturing operations there from a previous facility in Bridgeport.
U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jacob Schick, who retired from the military in 1910 but returned to service at the start of World War I, invented the Magazine Repeating Razor in 1921, according to The Razor Co. blog. The blades were stored in the handle and loaded when the head was flipped down and a blade inserted into the head of the razor. By 1927, Col. Schick sold all of his interests in the Magazine Repeating Razor Co. to the president of the American Chain and Cable Co.
The company was then acquired by Eversharp Inc. in 1946 and renamed the company Schick Safety Razor Co. However, the American Chain and Cable Co. continued to produce the razors for Schick until 1958 when Schick set up their own manufacturing facility in Connecticut.
