The number of nonfarm jobs in New York increased by 37,500 in July, according to preliminary, seasonally adjusted data released by the state Department of Labor.
The monthly rate of increase, 0.4 percent, was twice as high as the national rate of 0.2 percent for 255,000 new nonfarm jobs.
The private sector accounted for 36,200 new jobs, a 0.5 percent increase, setting a record high of 7,951,900 jobs.
Statewide unemployment remained unchanged at 4.7 percent, and below the U.S. rate of 4.9 percent.
The Hudson Valley region lost 1,500 nonfarm jobs in July, using estimates that are not seasonally adjusted.
Sectors that lost the most jobs were government, 2,600; trade, transportation and utilities, 2,400; and education and health services, 2,300.
Sectors that gained the most in the Hudson Valley were leisure and hospitality, 4,300, and service providing-other, 2,100.
The Hudson Valley region includes Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties.
The private sector job count is based on a payroll survey by the U.S. Department of Labor of 18,000 New York employers. The monthly estimates are subject to revision as more data becomes available. The unemployment rate is based on a monthly survey of 3,100 households.
