Westchester County lawmakers agreed to bond $5 million to repair 40 county roads and bridges that sustained damage last winter.
The Board of Legislators voted 16-0 on Monday to approve the repairs. Board Chairman Michael Kaplowitz, a Somers Democrat, said, “I am glad to see that bipartisan cooperation and a focus on serving the public allowed this funding to move forward without delay.”
County Executive Rob Astorino, a Republican, called the funding urgent.
“This is a big win for taxpayers and motorists,” Astorino said in a statement. “Last year”™s storms and tough winter did a number on our roads, and while our road crews did a good job making repairs where necessary, this new program gives the county the capability to respond more quickly when urgent repairs are needed.”
As many as 50 construction jobs are expected to be created during the course of the work, according to Legislator Michael Smith, R-Mount Pleasant.
