Israeli troops move on Gaza City: Israeli troops were moving closer to Gaza City today as the ground invasion of Gaza continues to develop and diplomatic efforts to bring about a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas continue. Almost 350 people holding foreign passports were allowed to leave Gaza yesterday and enter Egypt through the Rafah crossing. Another 500 are expected to be allowed to leave today. In addition, Palestinians in urgent need of medical treatment were taken to Egypt in about 100 trips by ambulances. About 220 trucks were allowed to enter Gaza from Egypt yesterday carrying humanitarian supplies. President Biden last night came out in favor of a humanitarian pause in the fighting but declined to support a more permanent cease-fire.
Tuberville blasted: Leading Republican senators including Lindsay Graham and Mitt Romney took to the Senate floor last night to blast their colleague, Tommy Tuberville, who has been single-handedly holding up the nominations of about 400 military professionals. Tuberville has blocked military appointments and promotions for months because he objects to a Pentagon policy ensuring access to reproductive health care. Graham accused Tuberville of doing great damage to the U.S. military. Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska said that the Russians and Chinese are thanking Tuberville for what he’s doing to undermine U.S. military readiness.
Santos stays: New York Republican Congressman George Santos remains in Congress after a vote last night to expel him failed. The expulsion vote was 179 in favor of kicking him out to 213 to allow Santos to remain in the House of Representatives. Thirty-one Democrats joined with most of the Republicans in voting to allow Santos to stay his office. A House ethics investigation of Santos continues.
Trump Jr. testifies: Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump were due to be questioned today as the New York trial continued in the $250 million lawsuit filed by Attorney General Letitia James. The lawsuit alleged members of the Trump family and The Trump Organization committed bank, insurance and tax fraud. Judge Arthur Engoron has already ruled that they did commit the frauds that were alleged. In testimony yesterday, Donald Trump Jr. distanced himself from being responsible for creating fraudulent financial documents. He said he relied on financial information provided by accountants.
World Series: The Texas Rangers won the World Series last night, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks four games to one. This is the first time that the Rangers have won a World Series. The score of last night’s game played in Phoenix was 5 to 0. Texas Rangers’ shortstop Corey Seager was named most valuable player in the series.
Coach Bob Knight dies: College basketball coach Bob Knight has died at age 83 in Bloomington, Indiana. He had been in poor health for several years. Knight had coached at Indiana University, Texas Tech and Army. Teams coached by Knight won more than 900 games in 42 seasons.
