Pope Leo XIV is the first American pope
Cardinal Robert Prevost, age 69, from Chicago, has been named pope. He has taken the name Leo XIV. Speaking to the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo praised the late Pope Francis and indicated he would continue with Francis’ social policies that have shown support for immigrants while the Trump Administration has imposed opposite policies. President Trump said he was very happy about Poe Leo’s election and said it was a great honor for the United States.
Trump taps Pirro for Washington, D.C. position
Donald Trump says he is naming former Westchester County District Attorney and Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as interim U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C. Pirro’s appointment comes as the appointment of Ed Martin to the post ends and Republicans in the senate indicated they would not vote to confirm Martin to a full appointment in the position. During his first term in office, Trump had pardoned Pirro’s ex-husband Al Pirro, a prominent Westchester attorney.
Acting head of FEMA is fired
Cameron Hamilton, the acting chief of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was fired after having testified at a hearing of the House Appropriations Committee that he did not believe it is in the best interests of the American people to shut down the agency. Donald Trump has been calling for an end to FEMA. Sources said that Cameron Hamilton was escorted out of FEMA’s headquarters. Hamilton praised FEMA’s workforce as being tremendous and amazing.
Vance says India-Pakistan conflict none of America’s business
Vice President J.D. Vance says that the U.S. will not directly intervene in the fighting going on between India and Pakistan. He said that there should be a de-escalation but that the conflict is “none of America’s business.” President Donald Trump, while calling for peace between the two countries, said he would be happy to try to help bring about a settlement. During an interview on Fox news, Vance said the U.S. cannot control India and Pakistan.
Trump asks Supreme Court for go-ahead to deport 500,000
 The Trump Administration has asked the U.S. Supreme Court for an emergency order to block a ruling from a lower court that blocks them from deporting 500,000 people. The immigrants in question have temporary legal status to be in the U.S. They come from Haiti, Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. An appeals court refused to lift the order blocking the deportations that came from a federal judge in Boston.
Trump Administration announces plan to rebuild air traffic control
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has announced a four-year plan to completely rebuild the nation’s air traffic control system. The cost to replace everything has been estimated at from $12 billion to about $30 billion. Donald Trump’s largest campaign contributor, Elon Musk, has expressed an interest in having his satellite system used to carry air traffic control communications. The plan will need approval from Congress, which must appropriate the necessary funds.
