Hegseth and Caine say ceasefire is not over despite new shooting

Both Defense Secretary Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine said at a Pentagon briefing this morning that even though there has been new shooting between Iran and the U.S. the Trump administration is taking the position that the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is not over. Iran fired missiles and drones at U.S. Navy ships, which were shot down before they could hit their targets. The U.S. Navy sunk about a half dozen Iranian boats around the Strait of Hormuz. Caine said that Iran has fired at U.S. Navy ships 10 times. He also said that Iran attacked commercial ships nine times and seized two of them.

Strait of Hormuz traffic now at 5% of pre-war level

As the war in Iran enters its tenth week with no clear end in sight, shipping traffic in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted, playing havoc with global markets and supply chains for oil, natural gas, fertilizer and other essential products. Before the United States and Israel launched their attacks on Iran in late February about 3,000 vessels typically passed through the Strait of Hormuz each month, according to Lloyd’s List Intelligence. But since the war began, traffic has been reduced to a trickle, with just 191 vessels recorded crossing in the entire month of April. Traffic through Hormuz in the last two months has run at about 5% of the pre-war average, leading to shortages of refined products, especially in Asia.

Trump’s agents using force on people held without criminal conviction

The Washington Post reports that the Trump administration is using force on people it is holding in custody without having been convicted of any crime. A review of internal documents by investigative reporters at the Washington Post reveals that people detained by Trump’s agents, especially those being held at immigration prisons, have been shocked by tasers, kicked, punched, put into choke holds, and sprayed with pepper spray. The Post’s reporters point out that the people are not convicts and that use of force incidents have increased more than 40% recently. The reports also found that the level of detail in required reports on the use of force by federal agents has significantly dropped since Donald Trump returned to the White House.

Ship with hantavirus cases remains stranded

Some human-to-human transmission may have occurred on board the cruise ship hit by a hantavirus outbreak that has left three people dead and several others ill, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday. Dr. Maria Van Kerhove, WHO’s director for epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention, told reporters, “The risk to the general public is low. This is not a virus that spreads like flu or like COVID. It’s quite different.” Almost 150 people, including 17 Americans, remain stranded on the MV Hondius which is currently anchored off the coast of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, an archipelago nation off Africa’s west coast. The ship, operated by tour company Oceanwide Expeditions, left Ushuaia, Argentina last month on a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, stopping off at some of the world’s most remoter islands

Secret Service shooting in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. Secret Service says its officers shot an armed man Monday afternoon near the Washington Monument after he fired at agents and wounded a juvenile bystander. Moments before the gunfire, Secret Service officers and agents who patrol the outer perimeter of the White House complex noticed “a suspicious individual that appeared to have a firearm,” Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn told reporters during a press conference. The man ran when uniformed Secret Service police approached him and he fired towards the officers, Quinn said. The officers returned fire, striking and wounding the man. Authorities are investigating whether the alleged gunman may have attempted to access a White House entry-point earlier Monday, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation. The suspect was shot in the torso and is currently listed in stable condition in a local hospital, according to the source.

Met Gala raises $42 million

Hundreds of stars ascended the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Met Gala on Monday evening, bringing a range of interpretations to this year’s dress code, “Fashion is Art.” The theme mirrored an accompanying exhibition titled “Costume Art” at the Met’s Costume Institute, for which the gala is a major source of income. This year, the Met Gala raised a record $42 million, up from last year’s record of $31 million, the museum announced at a press conference before the event. This year brought controversy due to the event’s primary sponsors, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, with protests planned around New York City. One protester attempted to breach the perimeter of the event before being stopped by police.
