Hunter Biden facing tax, gun charges:Â President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, has been charged with illegally possessing a handgun and failing to file and pay federal taxes for 2017 and 2018. Daand vid Weiss, the U.S. Attorney in Wilmington, Delaware, said in an email to the U.S. District Court in Wilmington today that Biden is going to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax charges and will enter into what’s called a pretrial diversion agreement with respect to the gun charge.
Trump trial date set:Â The trial of Donald Trump on a 37-count federal indictment that includes violations of espionage laws has been scheduled to begin August 14 in federal court in Florida by Judge Aileen Cannon. Cannon has told lawyers for the Justice Department and Trump to file any pretrial motions by July 24. Cannon is the judge who was appointed by Trump and issued a previous ruling in the case that favored Trump but was overturned by a federal appeals court that also harshly criticized her.
Eastman hearing:Â Former Trump advisor and attorney John Eastman is due to go before the State Bar in California today for a hearing on whether he’ll lose his license to practice law in California. Eastman is facing 11 charges in connection with the plans he concocted to help Donald Trump stay in power even though Trump had lost the 2020 presidential election.
Sub search:Â Search and rescue efforts continue in the Atlantic today in a race against time to locate a missing submersible that was on a voyage to the wreckage of the Titanic. Five people were on the vessel operated by OceanGate Expeditions. Contact with the sub was lost Sunday about 435 miles south of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Two members of a wealthy Pakistani family were among those on board. The U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian military are involved in the search and rescue operation.
Mississippi storms:Â Almost 50,000 homes were without electricity in southern parts of Mississippi after strong storms and tornadoes struck yesterday. One person is known dead and more than 24 were reported injured. The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings foreparts of Mississippi today due to expected heavy rainfall.
China and Cuba:Â The Wall Street Journal reported today that China and Cuba are in talks for China to set up a military training base in Cuba. The Journal referenced U.S. intelligence reports that it says reveal that the Chinese would station troops in Cuba. The Chinese base also would be used for spying against the U.S., according to the reporting.
