Canada: Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced today that he is stepping down due to rapidly declining support. In addition to stepping down as Prime Minister, he said he is giving up his position as leader of the Liberal Party. Polling indicated that Trudeau would lose in a general election that is scheduled for this year. The election is due to be held on or before Oct. 20. Trudeau’s loss of popularity coincides with attacks from Donald Trump, who has threatened to impose trade tariffs on goods imported to the U.S. from Canada.
Storm: From five to ten inches of snow are expected to fall on Washington, D.C., today with up to 16 inches in some spots as Congress meets to count up the Electoral College votes and certify that Donald Trump won the presidency. More than 500 flights were canceled at Washington Dulles and Reagan National Airports as of early this morning. The Washington storm is part of a wider storm that is affecting an area from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic Coast.
Lawsuit: U.S. Steel and Japan’s Nippon Steel filed a lawsuit this morning against the Biden Administration asking that the executive order signed by President Biden last week banning Nippon Steel from buying U.S. Steel be thrown out. The steel companies say Biden acted improperly and signed the executive order for political purposes. The steel companies said the lawsuit shows their commitment to going ahead with their deal.
Oil: President Biden today moved to protect the entire U.S. East Coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific Ocean off the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California, and additional portions of the Northern Bering Sea in Alaska from future oil and natural gas leasing. The territory protected under two memos issued by Biden covers more than 625 million acres of U.S. waters. Biden determined that the environmental and economic risks and harms that would result from drilling in these areas outweigh their limited fossil fuel resource potential.
Awards: The movie “The Brutalist” won the Golden Globes for best motion picture drama at last night’s awards ceremony. Fernanda Torres won best actress in a motion picture drama. Deme Moore won best actress in a musical or comedy motion picture. Adrien Brody won best actor in a drama motion picture for “The Brutalist.” The best musical or comedy motion picture was “Emilia Perez.”
Jimmy Carter: Former President Jimmy Carter lies in repose at The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta today, where the public can pay their respects until tomorrow at 6 a.m. Tomorrow, the late president and his family will be flown to Joint Base Andrews outside of Washington, D.C. President Carter’s casket will be placed on a horse-drawn caisson and taken to the U.S. Capitol for a 3 p.m. ceremony. Carter will lie in state at the Capitol through Wednesday. On Thursday, a funeral service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral.
