Federal agents raided a business in Newark, New Jersey, looking for illegal immigrants. Raids also were conducted in New York City. Nationwide, more than 500 people were taken into custody. U.S. military aircraft were used to fly people being thrown out of the country to Guatemala. Newark’s Mayor Ras Baraka said what the Trump Administration did in his city was an unconstitutional violation of people’s rights and the agents who conducted the raid did not have a warrant. The Trump Administration has backed down and is exempting Veterans Affairs from its government job freeze.
After an outcry from various veterans groups and politicians, the Trump Administration has backed down from the job freeze it had put into effect in an apparent effort to cripple functioning of Veterans Affairs, formerly known as the Veterans Administration. Trump on Jan. 20 signed a federal job freeze order that would have blocked the VA from hiring 300,000 health care workers needed to continue providing health care services to veterans. Trump threatens to withhold federal aid to California fire victims ahead of his scheduled visit to the affected area.
Five new wildfires have erupted in Southern California, ahead of Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to the area today. Trump has threatened to withhold federal aid to people whose homes and businesses were destroyed by the wildfires that were intensified by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds. Trump has falsely claimed that California Gov. Gavin Newsom diverted water supplies from the area hit by the wildfires. During his first term in the White House, Trump claimed that California could avoid wildfires by raking up fallen leaves. A federal judge has blocked Donald Trump’s effort to rewrite a section of the U.S. Constitution by himself.
A federal district court judge in Seattle has blocked Donald Trump’s order taking away birthright citizenship, which is guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution. Judge John Coughenor said that the executive order that Trump signed is blatantly unconstitutional. He said that in his more than 40 years as a judge he has never seen a case as clear as this one. The case in Seattle is one of five lawsuits filed in response to Trump’s executive order to wipe out the section of the Constitution that says anyone born in the U.S. is a U.S. citizen. A problem with batteries has led to Ford recalling more than 270,000 vehicles.
Ford has issued a recall for more than 270,000 Broncos and Mavericks built between February 2021 and October 2023. Ford says that the cars may suddenly stop because of a problem with batteries made by a Chinese company. Ford says it previously stopped using batteries made by the Camel Battery Company of China but many remain in service. Donald Trump has issued pardons for people who violated federal law against interfering with reproductive health care services.
Following his pardoning or commuting the sentences of approximately 1,500 people convicted of crimes related to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Donald Trump has issued pardons to 23 people who had been convicted for blocking access to abortion clinics and intimidating patients and health care workers. Trump said it was a great honor for him to issue the pardons.
