Trump plans new tariffs
President Donald Trump said countries that do business with Iran will face a new 25% tariff, a move aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran amid a wave of anti-government protests. The announcement could mean goods from China — a major trading partner of both Iran and the U.S. — would be significantly more expensive ion the U.S. The tariffs could also deal a major blow to India, which is already reeling from existing American levies. At the same time, Trump has floated the possibility of U.S. military intervention to “rescue” anti-government protesters in Iran, hundreds of whom have been killed. A communications shutdown imposed by authorities on Thursday has largely cut Iranians off from the outside world, further isolating the country during the unrest. The U.S. government has urged all Americans to leave Iran immediately.
Minneapolis and Illinois sue over ICE
Minnesota and Illinois are suing the Trump administration over Donald Trump’s unprecedented use of federal agents, which has included cases of Trump’s masked agents acting like secret police. “We have watched in horror as unchecked federal agents have aggressively assaulted and terrorized our communities and neighborhoods in Illinois, undermining Constitutional rights and threatening public safety,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in a statement Monday. “This has to stop; it just has to stop,” Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison also said at a news conference announcing the lawsuit. Both Minnesota and Illinois are seeking an injunction to halt ICE operations in their states as officials criticize stepped-up enforcement actions in Democratic strongholds like Chicago and the Twin Cities.
Trump White House to control Justice Department official
The normal practice of the Department of Justice operating as a nonpolitical agency free of interference from the White House is about to be openly junked according to Vice President Vance. Vance says that the new assistant attorney general position being created at the Justice Department will be run out of the White House and will be controlled by him and President Trump. Vance said that the new assistant attorney general will focus on fraud. When NBC News asked Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche last month whether the Department of Justice was taking direction from Trump about whom to prosecute, Blanche responded, “ No, of course we’re not.”
Supreme Court hearing transgender cases
The Supreme Court is hearing two cases today examining whether states can bar transgender women from competing on female sports teams. It is one of the most closely watched disputes of the justices’ current term, centering on whether the restrictions violate federal anti-bias statutes or the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. This comes as President Trump has moved to punish institutions that are inclusive of trans athletes — in some cases by threatening their federal funding. Opponents argue that transgender women retain unfair physical advantage after puberty that would deprive women of opportunities to succeed. Trans athletes and advocates, in turn, point to a lack of consistent, conclusive research to support the claim.
The BBC to ask for dismissal of Trump’s lawsuit
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has filed a court document indicating it will ask that Donald Trump’s defamation lawsuit against it be thrown out of court. Trump, who is seeking $10 billion in damages, accused the publicly owned corporation of defaming him and trying to influence American voters. In a court filing Monday, the BBC said it will “move to dismiss the complaint” as the Florida court where Trump lodged his lawsuit lacks “personal jurisdiction” over the case, noting that the documentary in question was not made or produced in Florida and was not broadcast in Florida. The BBC also argues that Trump “will not be able to prove, that the program caused him any cognizable injury.”
Trump’s treasury chief opposes investigation into Powell
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has told people that he is unhappy with Donald Trump pushing a criminal investigation of Fed Chair Jerome Powell, a source with knowledge of the matter told CNN. Bessent has expressed concern that the decision will negatively impact the markets. He has warned Trump in the past that firing Powell would also cause volatility in the markets. The investigation – which drew bi-partisan criticism after it was first revealed on Sunday evening – centers on Powell’s June testimony before Congress about the central bank’s $2.5 billion renovation of its headquarters in Washington, D.C. Bessent’s frustration was first reported by Axios, which said he had told Trump late Sunday that the federal investigation into Powell “made a mess.” Trump, meanwhile, claims he knows nothing about the investigation into Powell.
