Trump administration Venezuela operation endangers JetBlue flight
The flightcrew of a JetBlue passenger jet en route from Curacao to New York City avoided a midair collision with an Air Force tanker plane off the coast of Venezuela on Friday it has been learned. The JetBlue pilots stopped their climb when they spotted the Air Force plane. “We almost had a midair collision up here,” the JetBlue pilot said, according to a recording of his conversation with air traffic control. “They passed directly in our flight path … They don’t have their transponder turned on, it’s outrageous.” The transponder is a piece of equipment required to be turned on that makes aircraft show up on equipment used by other airplanes and air traffic control. The JetBlue pilot said the Air Force plane subsequently entered Venezuelan airspace. President Trump has said the U.S. would be conducting covert operations in Venezuela.

Progress reported in Ukraine peace talks
President Donald Trump’s special envoy said Sunday that progress was made during lengthy US-Ukraine talks in Berlin and that discussions will continue today. The talks come as Trump is intensifying his push for a peace deal in Russia’s nearly four-year-old war. Meanwhile, a barrage of Russian drone and missile attacks over the weekend targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure left more than a million households without power, the interior ministry said. Russia has focused on crippling Ukraine’s energy sector during winter to leave civilians without heat.
Deadline today for pulling troops out of LA
A preliminary junction was due to go into effect today that would block Donald Trump from keeping U.S. military forces on duty in Los Angeles. California had filed a lawsuit asking that control of the National Guard be returned to the state. Trump had taken control and ordered some California National Guard units into Los Angeles, saying that they were needed to protect federal property and prevent demonstrations against the administration’s immigration policies. A federal judge ruled in favor of the state, but the administration filed an appeal and the judge put as temporary hold on his order that control of the guard units must be returned to the state.
