Ukraine war:Â Ukrainian President Zelenskyy describes the approximately one-hour telephone conversation he and China’s President Xi had this morning as having been meaningful. China said that Xi told Zelenskyy that China wants to work toward bringing an end to the war Russia started and plans to send an envoy to Ukraine in order to discuss a diplomatic solution.
Carlson invited to go on RT:Â Russia’s state-owned television operation RT has extended invitations to Tucker Carlson, the Fox News host who was fired Monday, to join its operation or appear on RT as a guest. Carlson from time to time on his Fox News telecasts expressed admiration of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and was outspoken in supporting Donald Trump when Trump was heaping praise on the Russian dictator.
The Cruz tape: A tape recording of a phone conversation involving Republican Sen. Ted Cruz that was made by fired Fox News producer Abby Grossberg, who is suing Fox, has Cruz talking about a plan to object to the certification of the 2020 election’s Electoral College votes and then pushing for appointment of a commission that could take away the election from Biden and hand it to Trump. The tape has Cruz telling Fox host Maria Bartiromo on the phone that he hoped they would be able to overturn the election result. Cruz has now Tweeted that he had said the same things publicly.
Roberts declines:Â Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has rejected an invitation to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee about Supreme Court ethics. Roberts had been invited to appear before a planned May 2 hearing about whether Supreme Court justices should be required to adhere to the same ethical standards as all other federal judges. The hearing was spurred by revelations that Justice Clarence Thomas had taken millions of dollars in gifts and funds from real estate sales from billionaire Harlan Crow that Thomas did not report.
Boeing financials:Â Boeing this morning reported first quarter 2023 revenues of $17.9 billion, up from $13.9 billion in the first quarter of 2022. Boeing showed a net loss for the quarter of $425 million, down from the $1.2 billion loss in the first quarter of last year. Boeing also announced it has signed agreements to collaborate with two South Korean institutes on commercial aircraft manufacturing, urban air mobility, aerospace semiconductors and cultivating aerospace industry talent.
Train wreck cleanup cost: Norfolk Southern, the railroad that had the derailment in Ohio that resulted in a fire and the burning of toxic chemicals, this morning reported first quarter revenues of $3.1 billion, up by $217 million from last year’s first quarter. Net income for the first quarter of 2023 was $711 million. Norfolk Southern said the Ohio accident has cost it $387 million so far.
