Diabetes program at Phelps receives Center of Excellence designation

PHELPS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL CENTER DIABETES EDUCATION PROGRAM in Sleepy Hollow has once again received designation as a Center of Excellence from the American Diabetes Association. The program first received designation in 2010. Recertification must be achieved every four years. Phelps is one of only three hospitals in Westchester to receive this distinction.

The center offers adults an integrated approach for managing diabetes, with access in one location to a complete range of diabetes and specialty care.

For newly diagnosed children and their families, Phelps offers specialized diabetes education programs as well as support groups.

HVHC and Mrs. Green’s partner to educate consumers

HUDSON VALLEY HOSPITAL CENTER in Cortlandt Manor and MRS. GREEN”™S NATURAL MARKETS have teamed up to educate consumers about how to read food labels, and provide consumers with new tools to make healthy eating decisions and avoid chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

JAMIE MOORE, director of sourcing and sustainability for Cura Hospitality, will present a lecture Sept. 19 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the hospital”™s Pataki Conference Center at 1992 Crompond Road aimed at educating consumers on what to look for when shopping at the grocery store and how to read through an overwhelming amount of information on product labels to determine which foods are right for a healthy lifestyle.

“Our partnership with Mrs. Green”™s ”” along with others we have forged with schools, physicians and restaurants ”” will give our community the tools it needs to incorporate healthy eating into their lives,”™”™ said JOHN C. FEDERSPIEL, president of Hudson Valley Hospital Center.

Housing Alliance to honor mentors

KEITH YIZAR and ROBERT REYNOLDS will be honored by the Washingtonville Housing Alliance at its annual dinner Oct. 8. Both honorees have dedicated their careers to serving the youth of the community, Yizar as a mentor and adviser at Mamaroneck High School and Reynolds as head of the Youth Division for the town of Mamaroneck Police Department. Yizar will receive the organization”™s Marzella Garland Award and Reynolds will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The alliance seeks to preserve and enhance the quality of life in the village of Mamaroneck and the surrounding area. Formed in 1980 to improve the housing conditions of low- and moderate-income residents in the Mamaroneck area, WHA builds affordable housing, improves existing housing and undertakes other supportive activities designed to sustain a community that is culturally diverse, multigenerational and of mixed income.

This year, the alliance joined with Westhab Inc. to enhance its housing portfolio and increase services to the Mamaroneck community. Westhab also operates a wide range of service programs, including employment services, youth services and supportive housing for veterans, seniors, youth and the disabled.

All proceeds from the dinner at the Bonnie Briar Country Club in Larchmont will directly support the alliance. Tickets are $140 per person. For more information, contact Deborah Hays at 914-345-2800, ext. 156, or Deborah.Hays@westhab.org.
