Urologic surgery goes high-tech
Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester has expanded its da Vinci robot-assisted surgery program to include urology services.
The state-of-the-art, minimally invasive treatment method utilizes three-dimensional imaging and high-definition viewing options for surgery.
The robotic system mirrors the surgical movements of the physician, magnifying the image by 10 times for precision accuracy.
Laparoscopic procedures are currently conducted for general, gynecologic and colorectal surgeries at the hospital.
In other news at Sound Shore, Dr. John Phillips has joined the medical staff as urologic-oncology surgeon and will specialize in minimally invasive treatment for diseases of the prostate, bladder and kidneys.
Phillips is a graduate of Wesleyan University and received a medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine; he serves as associate professor in the Department of Urology at New York Medical College.
Supermarket provides senior transport
Stop & Shop Supermarket in New Rochelle is teaming up with the Soundview Apartments and Low-Savin Residence at United Hebrew of New Rochelle senior-living campus to shuttle residents to-and-from the local grocery store each week.
“This is a win-win for both of us,” said Rita Mabli, president and CEO of United Hebrew, in a statement. “Our tenants have a ride and the supermarket has more customers.”
The partnership began after the shuttering of an A&P Supermarket on Pelham Road, which was across the street from the senior residences.
United Hebrew has also partnered with the Beth-El Synagogue Center of New Rochelle”™s North End Seniors Program to sponsor and enhance its wellness services, recreational activities and rehabilitation programs.
Elant takes home honors
Elant, a Goshen-based provider of in-home and day treatment programs with seven locations including Elant at Brandywine in Briarcliff Manor, was presented a number of awards by the New York State Health Facilities Association, honoring exemplary employees and programs at skilled-nursing facilities throughout the state.
Elant at Fiskill was awarded an Innovative Practice Award for its Changing to a Culture of Person-Centered Care program, which was implemented by Pat Long, director of nursing. The program trains nursing-home staff to provide personal care for residents with dementia or who are otherwise non-communicative.
Mary Lou Koziol, a registered nurse at Elant at Wappingers Falls was awarded the Registered Nurse of the Year Award.
Susan Maglio, licensed practical nurse at Elant at Fishkill, was awarded the Licensed Practical Nurse of the Year Award.
Jean Modica, activity coordinator at Elant at Wappingers Falls, was awarded the Hearts and Hands Award.
Teri Cron, certified nursing assistant at Elant at Fishkill, was awarded the Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year Award.
