A team of students from Greenwich High School has won the regional competition for the 2018 National Science Bowl (NSB) and is set to compete in the NSB National Finals this spring in Washington, D.C. The NSB is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said, “The National Science Bowl continues to be one of the premier academic competitions across the country and prepares America”™s students for future successes in some of the world”™s fastest-growing fields in science, technology and engineering.”
About 14,000 students in middle school and high school have participated in 113 regional tournaments in preparation for the finals to be held April 26 through 30. The top 32 teams will win $1,000 for their schools”™ science departments. The top two high school teams will receive grand prizes, to be announced later. Last year, the top two teams won all-expenses-paid trips to Alaska where they explored glaciers, marine life, geology and more.
The students compete in a fast-paced question-and-answer format where they solve technical problems and answer questions on a range of science disciplines, including biology, chemistry, earth and space science, physics and math.
The Greenwich NSB team includes Henry Shi, grade 12; Phoebe Hartch, grade 10; and eleventh-graders Rahul Subramaniam, Derrick Xiong and Nicholas Liu. Math teacher Maria Buono coaches the team.
