A three-alarm fire damaged seven storefronts on Caryl Avenue in Yonkers Wednesday evening.
No civilians were injured in the fire, located at 3-15 Caryl Ave. However, three of the more than 55 responding fireman reported minor injuries, said Yonkers Fire Department Deputy Chief of Personnel Thomas Fitzpatrick.
The building contained a bakery, two small markets, a hair salon and a few vacant storefronts. Each are now closed and will likely be for some time as officials from the Department of Health, police department and other  agencies inspect the building.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, which started at 6:30 p.m. However, initial reports show it likely started within the stores’ shared basement, which is common in old buildings. Fitzpatrick said the open basement was likely why the fire spread as rapidly as it did.
