Sacred Heart Greenwich recently announced the renaming and blessing of its on-campus observatory as the Kernaghan Observatory, in honor of Sr. Marie Kernaghan, RSCJ (1900–1986).
A pioneering woman in science, Kernaghan was the first woman to earn a doctorate from Saint Louis University, receiving her Ph.D. in physics in 1929. She described her major scientific interests as nuclear and quantum physics and space. During her teaching career at Maryville College in St. Louis, she corresponded with many of the most prominent physicists of the 20th century. Her life and work exemplified a profound pursuit of knowledge, guided by curiosity and a deep faith in the Creator of all light.
“Sr. Marie Kernaghan was a remarkable woman whose love of science and faith in God’s creation inspired generations of students,” said President Michael Baber. “Naming the Kernaghan Observatory in her honor celebrates both her pioneering achievements and the spirit of curiosity, discovery and intellectual courage that we seek to cultivate in every Sacred Heart Greenwich student.”
Featuring a modern 14-inch reflecting telescope, an 85mm TeleVue refractor telescope and an 80mm Lunt solar telescope, the Kernaghan Observatory serves as an interdisciplinary resource integrated throughout the K–12 curriculum. Students are provided an exceptional opportunity to explore STEM fields, including astronomy and deepen their understanding of the universe. In addition to supporting studies in science, the observatory enriches courses in theology and English by connecting students with real-world astronomical phenomena and encouraging reflection on the relationship between scientific discovery and God’s creation.
Students from Sacred Heart Greenwich and neighboring schools have used the observatory to observe the sun, planets, nebulae, star clusters and galaxies. They have also participated in collecting data to calculate the size, shape and position of asteroids. Additional research conducted through the observatory includes studies of exoplanets, supernovae, stellar spectroscopy and astrophotography.
