The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has granted $250,000 for senior housing in New Rochelle.
The grant will be used for the recently opened, $6 million Meadow Lane apartments on the campus of United Hebrew of New Rochelle.
The independent senior living facility includes 24 one-bedroom apartments and eight studios. The housing is designed for people who are at least 62 years old or who have mobility issues and whose income qualifies under U.S. Housing and Urban Development guidelines.
Even as the population has aged in the region, according to a United Hebrew press release, programs and housing for low income seniors have decreased dramatically.
The new apartments will alleviate a wait list of more than three years for United Hebrew”™s Soundview Apartments, a 135-unit senior living facility.
Meadow Lane is on a 7.5 acre campus at 391 Pelham Road near New Rochelle Harbor, where United Hebrew also operates a nursing home, assisted living facilities, home health care options and rehabilitation center.
The Weinberg Foundation is based in Owings Mills, Maryland. It grants about $100 million a year to nonprofit organizations that service low income and vulnerable people, primarily in the United States and Israel.
