BRIDGEPORT – The Bridgeport Fire Department put out a fire Thursday morning at the former PSEG Bridgeport Harbor Station that is being remediated and demolished to make way for a residential/commercial mixed-use development.
“At approximately 10:30 am, the Bridgeport Fire Department responded to Russell (Street) and Atlantic Street (Power Plant) to report of a structure fire,” according to a statement from Shawna White, public information officer of City of Bridgeport Emergency Management. “Upon arrival, units located the fire and commenced within 45 minutes. There was no collapse. All plant personnel and fire department members are accounted for, no reported injuries, and the Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.”
Bridgeport Station Development, which was chosen as developer of the former PSEG power plant site in November 2024, has already commenced with interior demolition as it looks to prep the property for remediation.
The state, through the Community Investment Fund, is providing $22.5 million for the demolition and remediation of the contaminated plant. The fund is a statewide program created to foster economic development in historically underserved communities. It is overseen by a 21-member board and administered by the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development.
According to a report last week in the New Haven Register, the developer is moving demolition of the smokestacks at the site until April 2026. However, a photo of the Aug. 28 fire provided by the Bridgeport Fire Department shows what looks like part of a smokestack on fire that is being extinguished.
