Waterfront property owners could be eligible for reimbursement from Westchester County for the cost of cleaning up litter that escaped from a Mamaroneck wastewater plant last year after a severe storm.
The Westchester County Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mamaroneck released thousands of small white plastic disks after a rain storm on March 8, 2011. The disks, used to help with the removal of nitrogen from the wastewater, escaped from an aeration tank which had been upgraded.
The media disks are made from the same non-toxic plastic as milk jugs. When they escaped, many washed up along the Sound Shore in Westchester and New York City, as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Those who own land, including municipalities, can request a partial reimbursement for costs related to cleanup efforts between June 1, 2011 and Oct. 31, 2013. The Department of Environmental Facilities will administer the reimbursement effort, and offer property owners 5 percent of the cost to remove the media disks.
