In a special session of the Connecticut General Assembly, legislators eliminated a tax on petroleum-based products that would have taken effect July 1, and hastily cobbled together a bill authorizing fuel stations to offer discounts for drivers who pay cash.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell urged legislators in early June to defer the petroleum tax.
The two bills could reduce by 15 cents a gallon the cost of fuel in Connecticut, which at $4.38 in mid June trailed only California according to the American Automobile Association.
