STAMFORD – Americares has been named the eighth largest charity in the United States by Forbes based on its $1.54 billion in private donations in fiscal year 2023 .
Americares, the Stamford-based health-focused relief and development organization, is included in Forbes magazine’s America’s Top 100 Charities.
“This recognition is a powerful testament to the trust our donors place in Americares to efficiently and effectively deliver life-saving aid and support essential health services worldwide,” said Americares President and CEO Christine Squires. “We are deeply grateful to our supporters, who allow us to meet the most pressing health needs in times of disaster and every day.”
Forbes awarded Americares a score of 99 percent for its fundraising efficiency, which is based on the percentage of private donations remaining after fundraising expenses, and a score of 98 percent for its charitable commitment, which is based on the percentage of the charity’s total expenses that directly support the organization’s mission.
Americares supports more than 4,000 health centers worldwide, including nearly 1,000 free clinics and community health centers in the United States, with transformative health projects, medicine and medical supplies.
In fiscal year 2023, the period for which Americares provided data for the Forbes survey, Americares delivered 32.2 million prescriptions and 4.5 million medical supplies worldwide —reaching an estimated 8.1 million people with medicine alone.
Americares also responds to more than 35 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year, delivers and supports quality health services at Americares-run clinics and partners with local health centers to address the unique health needs of their communities focusing on the root causes of illness and disease.
In fiscal year 2023, the organization responded to 40 emergencies in 28 countries, including Hurricane Ian in the United States, flooding in Pakistan and a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria and the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.
Additionally, Americares operates primary care clinics in Colombia, El Salvador and India, which, combined, provided nearly 400,000 patient consultations in fiscal year 2023, including mental health support.
One of the leading global nonprofit providers of donated medicine and medical supplies, Americares distributes over $1 billion in medicine and supplies to 85 countries on average each year. Since it was founded 45 years ago, Americares has provided more than $23 billion in aid to 164 countries, including the United States.
Americares has consistently earned a 4-star rating—the highest possible—from Charity Navigator and meets all 20 BBB Wise Giving Alliance standards for charity accountability.
