Lyndhurst’s rose garden with over 250 roses comes into full bloom in June. To celebrate, Lyndhurst is mounting a new program, Rose Weekend, which celebrates the magical 67-acre estate. The event has a special ticket price of $30 per car and offers activities for all ages and levels of interest. It’s not just about the spectacular rose garden but about the many natural resources on the estate, allowing visitors to renew their interest in the natural world around us. The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday with grounds entry beginning at 10am with the last entry to the property at 4pm.
This new event will offer activities for all sensibilities from garden traditionalist to radical conservationist. Of note, Lyndhurst will sell the heirloom Helen Gould rose, named after the estate’s fourth owner, a committed naturalist. Some of the programs include;
- The interactive Green Scene offers practical advice about gardening from local experts-
Seeds of Design with Shobha Vanchiswar, a poet, garden columnist and an award-winning garden designer
Ardsley Pollinator Pathway Learn how choosing native plants not only helps to support pollinators, but will fill your garden with species that are best suited to our climate and seasonal changes
Seed on Hudson with Katie Tolson who has a home-grown nursery and flower farm in Hastings
Hudson Compost Learn why Composting is an environmentally friendly practice that reduces food waste in landfills, cuts down on plastic bags, lowers your greenhouse gas footprint, and supports natural fertilizer production. - Walk-and-Talks Tours explore the stunning park-like landscape with expert guidance from an arborist, Justin Rawson and fern expert, Gray Williams, will offer guided tours of Lyndhurst’s fully restored fern garden.
- Learn about organic rose care, with Rosarian Peter Winne, who will cover everything from planting and pruning to training roses, all without chemical inputs. Grow healthy roses and care for them with confidence.
- Celebrate the tulip with Polly Nicholson, the author of the new book, The Tulip Garden. Learn insider tips on cultivating the beloved bulb.
- Get your hands dirty and learn the proper way to transfer herbs and plant seeds in a Potting Workshop by Nick Storrs. All supplies will be provided.
- Kids of all ages can enjoy whimsical Puppet Shows including a Lyndhurst Rose Queen marionette dancing through the gardens.
- Learn industry tricks and tips in the art of preparing, nurturing, enhancing the beauty of roses in a Rose Hand Bouquet Demonstration. All participants will receive their own rose to de-thorn and reflex order to elevate its natural beauty.
- See the spectacular landscape through the eyes of Plein Air Painters, who have been invited to interpret the landscape.
Lyndhurst’s landscape is always something to enjoy. If you do not want to participate in an activity, enjoy the shade and Hudson River views. Snacks are available all day at our visitor’s center or bring your own picnic to enjoy.
