The Nuclear Regulatory Commission declared safe for public use most of the land where Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Plant stood.
The plant generated electricity for the region between 1967 and 1996. This past July, Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Co. completed the dismantling and decommissioning process.
Residual contamination on the land in Meriden is below NRC requirements for maximum radiation doses, and the agency said the land poses no threat to public health.
Five acres where spent nuclear fuel is stored remain under NRC oversight.
Connecticut Yankee is required to maintain a $100 million in nuclear liability insurance coverage until the waste is removed.
Connecticut Yankee has yet to indicate its plans for the property. The company”™s largest shareholder is Northeast Utilities and its Connecticut Light & Power subsidiary.
