Gas prices spiked over the past week, with Connecticut and New York drivers paying above the national average to fill their cars.
According to AAA data released this morning, the nationwide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.75, up from last week”™s average of $3.59 and last month”™s average of $3.54. One year ago, the average was $4.22; the record high was $5.01 set on June 14, 2022.
In Connecticut, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.76, the highest for the New England states. The price is up from last week”™s average of $3.70 and last month”™s average of $3.68; the price was $4.52 one year ago. Fairfield County”™s $3.79 average is the highest for the state”™s counties.
In New York, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.81, the highest for the entire Northeast region. The price is up from last week”™s average of $3.64 and last month”™s average of $3.62; the price was $4.34 one year ago. Within the Hudson Valley region, Westchester has the highest average at $3.92 and Sullivan County had the lowest at $3.77.
California had the highest statewide average at $4.99 and Mississippi had the lowest at $3.25. AAA attributed the situation to a higher oil price, which has recently increased to the mid-$70s per barrel.
“Gas demand barely budged from last week, yet compared to this time in 2022, it is higher nationwide except for the Gulf Coast, Texas, and New Mexico,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “Some industry experts speculate that scorching temps in that region are keeping people off the road.”
