A Quinnipiac University national poll of registered voters released May 20 finds that President Donald Trump’s approval numbers continue to sink. More than two months after the U.S. launched an attack on Iran and oil prices jumped leading to sharp increases in gasoline and diesel fuel costs, 33% approve of the way Trump is handling the economy and 64% disapprove, the lowest approval on the economy Trump has received in either of his terms as president.
The numbers are even lower than they were in Quinnipiac’s poll from April 15, when 38% of voters approved of the way Trump was handling the economy and 57% disapproved.
In addition to the economy, voters were asked about Trump’s handling of immigration, a centerpiece for his administration. The poll found that 40% approve of what he’s been doing on immigration while 57% disapprove.

On trade policy, Trump had a 36% approval and 59% disapproval. Foreign policy in general brought 35% approval and 59% disapproval.
Only 33% approve of what Trump has been doing regarding Iran while 61% disapprove. When asked specifically for their view of the military action Trump has taken toward Iran, 38% of voters said they support the U.S. military action against Iran, while 56% oppose it. This is down slightly from Quinnipiac’s April 15 poll, when 40% supported the U.S. military action against Iran and 53% opposed it.
Voters were asked how much they blame Donald Trump for the recent rise in gasoline prices: 55% said a lot, 17% said some, 11% said not much, and 16% said not at all.
When it comes to overall job approval for Trump, 34% of voters approve of the way he is handling his job as president, while 58% disapprove. This is down from Quinnipiac University’s April 15 poll, when 38% of voters approved of the way Trump was handling his job as president and 55% disapproved.
More than two-thirds of voters (68%) think Donald Trump is not focused enough on addressing the problems most Americans are facing, while 29% think he is.
Quinnipiac found that if the November elections were held today, 50% of voters would want to see the Democratic Party win control of the United States House of Representatives, while 39% would want to see the Republican Party win control of the House. There was no opinion from 11%. Twenty percent of voters approve of the way the Democrats in Congress are handling their job, while 72% disapprove, nearing the all-time low set in Quinnipiac University’s December 2025 poll, when 18% of voters approved and 73% disapproved.
With respect to Republicans in Congress, 27% of voters approve of the way the Republicans are handling their job, while 67% disapprove. This compares with Quinnipiac University’s December 2025 poll, when 35% of voters approved and 58% disapproved.
Trump’s key cabinet officials didn’t fare too well in the polling numbers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had 40% job approval and 46% disapproval, with 14% not offering an opinion. Vice President Vance had 39% approval, 54% disapproval and 7% not offering an opinion. Secretary of Defense Hegseth had 34% approval, 55% disapproval and 11% not offering an opinion. FBI Director Kash Patel had 30% approval, 56% disapproval and 14% not offering an opinion.
Quinnipiac found that 57% of the people polled disapproved of the way the U.S. Supreme Court is doing its job with only 33% approving. That compares with Quinnipiac’s July 16, 2025, poll that showed the court had 40% approval and 53% disapproval.
