The U.S. State Department is ordering 11 utility helicopters from Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., with the company not immediately disclosing terms of the deal.
Sikorsky is based in Stratford and is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.
Earlier this year, the State Department entered into a five-year contract for up to 110 upgraded Sikorsky S-61 helicopters, initially ordering four aircraft under the deal which will be deployed in Afghanistan this fall.
The newest aircraft are scheduled for delivery next summer, and will be used in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The S-61 has been flying more than 50 years. Sikorsky has recently upgraded the aircraft to include composite rotor blades and electronic gauges among other features.
