The New York State Thruway Authority has reopened its Ramapo Service Area on the southbound side of I-87 in Sloatsburg following completion of a construction project. This is the 18th revamped service area that the Thruway Authority has reopened. The $450 million funding to redevelop and modernize all 27 Thruway service areas comes from private investment related to the businesses that are located there. More than 90,000 vehicles travel the Thruway past the Ramapo Service Area each day.
“We are excited that the Service Area Project continues to progress,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Frank G. Hoare. “This project is just one of the many initiatives we are undertaking to enhance and modernize the Thruway system, ensuring a better and more efficient experience for all travelers.” Hoare noted that the Thruway is marking its 70th anniversary this year.
The Ramapo Service Area is located on I-87 southbound between exit 16 for Harriman and exit 15A for Sloatsburg and Suffern. A new building was constructed that encompasses more than 20,000 square feet.
Businesses featured at the new facility include Shake Shack, a Starbucks drive-thru, Panera, Panda Express, Applegreen C-Store and Taste NY Food and Drink Products. The service area includes a playground, outdoor seating, a dog walking area, a climate controlled pet enclosure, a private nursing area, and a tourism kiosk.
Four high speed electric vehicle chargers are due to be installed at the Ramapo Service Area as part of the Thruway Authority’s plan to have at least 130 fast charging electric vehicle charging stations along the Thruway’s 570 miles.
The Thruway Authority reports that last year motorists took just under 397 million trips and drove 8.1 billion miles on the Thruway.
