New York Judge Arthur Engoron has rejected a filing by Donald Trump’s attorneys asking for a delay in the implementation of the $355 million judgment plus interest of about $100 million resulting from Trump being found guilty of fraud and falsification of business records. Engoron sent out an email notifying Trump’s legal team of his decision.
Trump’s attorneys had asked for a 30-day delay in the judgment going into effect. A delay would have stopped interest from accruing for each day that Trump did not either pay the judgment into an escrow account with the court or post a bond. The interest accumulates at more than $87,000 a day for each day the judgment is not paid.
“You have failed to explain, much less justify, any basis for a stay,” Engoron wrote. “The proposed judgment accurately reflects the spirit and letter of the February 16 Decision and Order,”
Trump attorney Clifford Robert had filed an allegation that New York Attorney General Letitia James who filed the fraud case against Trump, his sons, associates and Trump companies made no effort to settle the judgment and failed to file required notices. In a response, James office called on the court to stop the Trump side from trying to move six of its entities from Trump Tower in Manhattan to Florida.
Trump’s side said they planned to appeal the decision that the defendants in the lawsuit filed by James had committed fraud.
