Greenwich Polo Club returns for another season of high-goal polo Sunday, June 8, with the American Cup.
Play continues with the East Coast Silver Cup (June 15, Father’s Day, June 22, June 29); the East Coast Gold Cup (July 6, 13 and 20); and the East Coast Open, sponsored by Audi (Aug. 24 and 31 and Sept. 7). The polo season concludes with the Greenwich Cup (Sept. 14), sponsored by Barbados.
Founded in 1981 by businessman, art collector and philanthropist Peter M. Brant, Greenwich Polo Club is one of the world’s premier high-goal polo venues, meaning that each team of four has a handicap of 20 goals or, likely, more. (The handicap ranking system ranges from -2 to 10.) Brant’s White Birch polo team – named for his White Birch Paper Co., producers of paper and paperboard products – has clinched more high-goal tournaments in the past 25 years than any other, winning the US Open Polo Championship in 2005.
Among the stars you’ll see in action on any given Sunday are Argentina’s Mariano Aguerre, Facundo Pieres, Hilario Ulloa and Nacho Figueras – the last having faced off against Prince Harry and his team for the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup in 2013, which the prince’s team won.
Greenwich Polo also offers an opportunity to enjoy area food and retail vendors while watching the players and their Thoroughbred “ponies” thunder down a field the size of nine gridirons under the high clouds of Greenwich’s undulating backcountry.
There are several ticket packages, some of which include the Players’ Lounge and Marcia Selden Catering. But the easiest way to enjoy Greenwich Polo is with a $50 car pass.
Horse season, however, does not end with polo. Over the past couple of years, the club has also hosted show jumping, this year on Sept. 27 and 28.
