Efforts to bring regular commercial flights back to Sikorsky Memorial Airport are gaining momentum, as the state Bond Commission approved $7 million for upgrades to the facility.
The Economic and Community Development grant will be used for pavement rehabilitation on Runway 11-29, fence installation, and an environmental assessment and initial design of additional revenue-generating opportunities at Bridgeport”™s Sikorsky Memorial airport.
Bridgeport owns the airport, although it is located in Stratford.
“Continued investment in the airport is critical,” said Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim. “These grant-funded improvements are a first step in pursuing the necessary changes to support the potential return of commercial passenger service in Bridgeport. Additionally, the long-awaited funds will ensure enhancements for existing tenants, attract new operators, and further advance our city as a hub for transportation.”

Earlier this month, Tailwind Air announced plans to offer daily nonstop weekday service for summer and fall travel between Sikorsky and Manhattan”™s Skyport seaplane terminal, starting July 29.
