Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art will present “Maks Levin: The Final Photographs,” an exhibition of the Ukrainian photojournalist’s last images taken during the ongoing war against Russia.
Maksym (‘Maks’) Yevhenovych Levin’s work was published across the Ukrainian media and by global news agencies such as the BBC, Associated Press and Reuters. Levin disappeared on March 13, 2022, and was last seen near the village of Moshchun attempting to recover a camera drone that was shootng images of the Russian invasion. His body was later found in a forest north of Kyiv and Reporters Without Borders concluded that Levin had been captured and killed by Russian soldiers.
The exhibition presents 15 photographs taken in the Kyiv area during the first weeks of the Russian invasion. Levin’s work will be on display from Jan. 25 through May 5.
“As war and its accompanying horrors persist in Ukraine, it is possible for us to become fatigued by the news, and develop a strong urge to look away,” said Matthew Hargraves, director of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. “These images by Maks Levin demand our attention. They bring the realities of life during conflict into sharp view and cause us to marvel at the bravery of this intrepid photojournalist and his countrymen.”
