The September 11 Memorial/Greenwich in Cos Cob Park will open to the public tomorrow with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m., celebrating its completion and commemorating the 14th anniversary of the attacks.
On Tuesday, workers put the finishing touches on the memorial, which took six years of planning and fundraising. Frank Petrillo, co-owner of Mount Vernon, N.Y.-based Petrillo Stone Corp., Nicholas Rotondi, a project manager at Greenwich-based Charles Hilton Architects and Fred Durante, president of Stamford-based Fred N. Durante Jr. Landscaping Services LLC, came to the memorial to oversee the work. All three companies were involved in the project.
Greenwich-based Doyle Herman Design Associates also contributed to the design, New Canaan-based R G Hull & Associates Inc. manufactured and supplied the glass for the towers and Brooklyn-based Ferra Designs assembled and fabricated the glass.

The memorial has two 12-foot glass towers perched on a hillside in the park overlooking the Indian Harbor. The names of the 32 people with ties to Greenwich who died on Sept. 11, 2001, are inscribed on the towers with a flag motif at the top. The memorial sits on grey pavement, reminiscent of the Twin Towers, encircled by wildflowers and benches.
In the spring the Greenwich Community Projects Fund, a nonprofit that provides community funding for special town projects, held a ceremony to mark the beginning of construction.
Petrillo said the architects did a fabulous job making sure everything came together in a short period of time.
“It”™s emotional when I come up here,” Petrillo said. “I think the project”™s in a wonderful location.”
