Akademos Inc., a Norwalk firm that provides textbooks, e-books and virtual learning solutions to students and schools across the U.S., has secured $400,000 in state loans and grants to help expand its operations.
The funding, which was announced last week and will be provided by the state Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), includes a $100,000 grant and a 10-year, $300,000 loan at 2 percent interest. Akademos said it plans to use the funds to hire seven new employees and incorporate new software services.
“This funding will allow us to expand faculty awareness and student access to lower-cost educational materials as well as enable us to continue to develop and introduce new textbook delivery options,” said CEO John Squires.
Separately, a Stratford laboratory that specializes in the environmental analysis of water, soil and air samples for contaminants has secured a $75,000 DECD grant.
York Analytical Laboratories Inc., on Research Drive in Stratford, recently added 5,000 square feet of space to its facilities and hired four new staff members. The state grant will help York finance a computer systems upgrade and improved heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in its labs, according to town of Stratford officials.
