Amtrak ridership continues to increase, with March setting an all-time high in ridership in the history of the railroad.
Ridership grew 0.9 percent in the first six months of 2013 and officials expect to meet or surpass last year’s record of 31.2 million passengers by the end of the fiscal year.
In a statement announcing the growth in ridership, Amtrak CEO Joe Boardman said federal and capital funding was needed to support existing services and the development of new ones.
Despite relatively low ridership levels  following Hurricane Sandy, ridership on the Northeast Regional corridor is also on track to surpass 2012 levels. In March, ridership on the line ”“ which runs from Boston, through New Haven, to Washington D.C. ”“ increased 1.9 percent year-over-year.
