The latest Quinnipiac University poll shows a majority of American voters oppose President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada and, China, 51% – 38%.
Republicans (76% – 12%) support Trump’s plan, while Democrats (89% – 7%) and independents (53% – 34%) oppose it.
“Will tariffs targeting foreign countries, intended to level the import-export playing field, end up hurting Americans at home? The numbers could suggest that’s exactly what voters fear will happen,” said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy.
Other findings from the first post-election poll on President-elect Trump included the optimism of Trump’s second term, a social media ban for children, and pardons of Jan. 6 rioters and President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter.
Trump’s second term
Voters 53% – 42 percent, say they are generally optimistic about the next four years with Donald Trump as president.
Social media ban
In the wake of Australia banning social media for children under 16 years of age, voters 59% – 31% say they would like to see a similar ban in the U.S.
Other key findings
·     A majority of voters (55%) say they prefer giving most undocumented immigrants in the U.S. a pathway to legal status, while 36% say they prefer deporting most undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
·     Voters 53% – 39% disapprove of President Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden.
·     Voters 59% – 33% oppose President Trump pardoning people convicted and jailed for their involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
