Since opening in October 2009, Walkway Over The Hudson has hosted more than 500,000 visitors. That number should jump July
The $40 million span is the longest elevated park in the world, crossing one of the world”™s best-known rivers. That accomplishment comes with a hefty price tag and the nonprofit group that oversees it is trying to raise money to offset the cost.
For visitors who would like to watch the city of Poughkeepsie”™s fireworks display from the Walkway on Sunday, July 4, wristbands are being sold at a number of participating stores (visit walkway.org for a complete list) for $10 each. Wristbands must be purchased in advance and are required for anyone over the age of 5.
The Walkway will close to the public at 5 p.m. on July 4 and re-open at 7 p.m. for those possessing valid wristbands. If the event is postponed, the fireworks show will be re-scheduled for July 5. There will be no refunds offered to wristband holders.
The nonprofit also asks fireworks-watchers to adhere to special regulations put in place for the event: No bicycles, skates or skateboards; no coolers, alcohol or smoking; and please, leave the dogs home.
No shuttle service will be available, so those with valid wristbands are encouraged to carpool and park in the city of Poughkeepsie or in the town of Lloyd on the Ulster County side. The Walkway can be accessed from either side of the river.
