Two programs in Sacred Heart University’s School of Computer Science & Engineering (SCSE) have recently achieved accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology( ABET).
SHU’s computer engineering and electrical engineering programs are the two newest programs at the university to be ABET accredited, following in the footsteps of the computer science, information technology and game design programs after their recognition in 2019. ABET is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The accreditation is retroactive to October 2021, meaning current students, as well as alumni, will benefit from this news. The ABET accreditation adds value to any degree and improves prospects for employment and career growth.
Director of the SCSE Tolga Kaya tasked with securing the accreditation said,
“ABET accreditation means that the world’s leading accreditation agency has approved our engineering curriculum.”
Students enrolled in SHU’s computer engineering and electrical engineering programs work with experienced faculty on innovative hands-on projects involving drones, 3D printers, electronics, laser cutters and more. Students collaborate on coding assignments and learn about the field through interactive activities.
David Taylor, dean of the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology (WCBT), said the accreditation is a “huge milestone” for the SCSE and the WCBT. “I am extremely proud of our engineering faculty for achieving this accreditation. In a few years, we expanded from a brand-new program with one faculty member to where we are today.”
Taylor and Kaya both believe this will make current and former students’ engineering degrees more valuable as technology and business are intertwined in today’s world. “We are among the pioneers in integrating both into a single college,” Taylor noted.
