Joe Ganim has successfully defended his position as Mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut’s largest city, in the fourth round of polling.
Members of Ganim’s staff were caught on camera violating election rules by inserting absentee ballots in drop
boxes during the city’s Democratic Primary on Sept 12 in 2023. Ganim narrowly won the primary, but the suspicions cast by the impropriety led to a court order that the primary be redone.
However, since, Connecticut Superior Court Judge William Clark lacked the authority to delay the city’s general election he ordered that both a new primary and a new general election be held after the first one. The State Elections Enforcement Commission provided additional resources for monitoring the subsequent elections.
Ganim’s chief challenger in each race was John Gomes. A former Ganim employee and fellow Democrat, Gomes, who lost both primaries, was also on the ballot as an independent.
In the final count according to the Connecticut Post, Ganim captured 59 percent of the vote with 6,356 votes to 38.4 percent or 4,318 votes for Gomes. David Herz, the Republican candidate, took the remaining 2.6 percent with 283 votes.
