A group of drivers for the popular rideshare apps Uber and Lyft organized by Justice for App Workers will go on strike today, Feb 14,
by refusing to accept trips starting or ending at Bradely International Airport between 11am and 1pm.
Similar strikes are planned at airports at 9 other airports, including Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and T.F. Green International Airport in Rhode Island, with additional strikes at airports in Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Texas.
Demonstration are also planned at each airport attended by rideshare drivers, those who drive for delivery apps like GrubHub, and their supporters.
“Uber, Lyft, and delivery drivers are TIRED of being mistreated by the app companies. We’re sick of working 80 hours/week just to make ends meet, being constantly scared for our safety, and worrying about being deactivated with the click of a button,” reads the statement announcing the strike.
Representatives for Justice for App Workers have told media outlets that Valentine’s Day was chosen as a day where there is often a large volume of travel.
The operators of several airports have noted that traditional taxi services are expected to operate as normal.
