Lerner tapped to lead medical society

The White Plains-based Westchester County Medical Society elected Robert G. Lerner, a hematologist at New York Medical College and Westchester Medical Center, to serve as society president for 2013-14.

Lerner was named to the post June 7 at the medical society”™s annual meeting at Westchester Country Club in Harrison. He assumes responsibilities July 1, succeeding Dr. Thomas T. Lee.

Lerner has been a member of the Westchester County Medical Society, which was founded in 1790, since 1982. He is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology. He graduated from the New York University School of Medicine in 1960.

Lerner”™s training included a medical internship and residency at Bellevue Hospital and Montefiore Hospital. Following his military service, he earned a fellowship in hematology at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles County Hospital.

In 1967, Lerner returned to New York, joining the faculty of New York Medical College as a professor of medicine. He practiced at Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital and at the same time was named chief of hematology at Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan.

In 1979, Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital closed and the New York Medical College clinical departments moved to Valhalla. Lerner began to practice hematology there.

He is chief of hematology/hemostasis at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He has served as acting chairman of the Department of Medicine of New York Medical College, and as associate medical director and medical board member of Westchester Medical Center.

Lerner serves on the state”™s Board for Medicine and its Department of Education. He also serves as a board member of the IPRO, a health care improvement organization based in Lake Success with 400 physicians and branches in 33 states. He is a member of the Westchester-Putnam Coalition for Access to Care.

Cuomo announces $10 million to modernize state electric grid

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has announced the availability of $10 million in grants that will seek to improve New York state”™s electric grid. The funding will be awarded to projects that will increase the efficiency of the grid and promote the use of clean energy technologies while reducing energy consumption levels and the cost to consumers.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) will finance the grants through the authority”™s Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Smart Grid Program, which typically offers funding for research, engineering studies, product development and demonstration projects.

The deadlines for submissions for the first and second rounds of funding proposals are Aug. 14 and Feb. 12, 2014, respectively. The willing applicants must help pay for part of the program costs.
